Job Description: DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshoots and repairs a wide range of electrical systems such as building and street lighting, fire alarm, and emergency lighting systems; equipment such as motors from fractional horsepower to 1000 horsepower, compressors, pumps and heaters; internal electric distribution centers with circuit breakers; network systems with transformers, switchgear, meters and relays; etc., with voltages from 13,200 to 208/120. Subject to hold over and recall on a 24 hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal. Frequently lifts and carries or otherwise moves objects such as tools weighing up to 50 pounds; regularly moves objects such as motors weighing up to 100 pounds.

Preventive maintenance includes work such as replacing contacts and springs on circuit breakers; checking motors and control centers on switchgear; and cleaning armatures and replacing bearings on motors for HVAC equipment, fire pumps, conveyor systems, exhaust fans, etc. Checks voltages, batteries and battery chargers on emergency and battery lights. Relamps as required.

Responds to trouble calls. Isolates faults in equipment wiring and circuits, and replaces or makes necessary repairs. Repairs tamper switches and resets fire alarms. Locates tripped breakers and recalculates line loads as required. Repairs motors by replacing couplings, belts, reduction gear, shafts, etc., modifying replacement parts as required to accommodate the appropriate function and working without schematics for old systems when necessary. Replaces/repairs broken light fixtures and illuminated exit signs. Removes and replaces ballasts, transformers, capacitors, sockets, starters, photo cells and fuses in lighting systems and controls for the terminals and street-side parking lots, sidewalks, flag poles, etc.

Uses drawings or blueprints to install conduit, wiring, circuits and receptacles for construction/renovation of office space and installation of communication lines or new equipment. Makes or modifies electrical drawings as required. Follows safe clearance switching orders to create temporary outage by taking feeder off line in the interior electrical vault so that special repairs or installations may be made.

Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on small appliances, e.g., replaces small motors, heating coils, timers and switches on hand driers. Occasionally installs conduit for the electronics technicians and assists in modifying or repairing electronic controls, equipment and systems. As assigned, assists door system mechanics in preventive maintenance, adjustment and repair of automatic doors, gates and conveyor systems. May respond to trouble calls on elevators, automatic doors and escalators and make minor repairs such as replacing fuses and tightening loose connections.

Regularly uses tools and equipment such as side cutters, wire strippers, adjustable wrench, hydrometer, motor field and armature tester, voltage tester, amp probe and volt ohm meter; occasionally uses pipe bender, pipe treading machine and hot stick. Maintains logs of trouble calls. Maintains safe working conditions and shops and work sites. Takes care of assigned tools and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: This position requires five (5) years of appropriate experience working with emergency generators, motors, AC and DC controls, high voltage systems and associated equipment. Also, working with transformers, connections, operations, and parallel and series circuits to recognize excessive current flow, take high-voltage feeders offline, and determine the reasons for tripped breakers, and similar tasks to assure operation of high-voltage distribution and lighting systems. Candidates must have a valid State driver’s license, and be able to obtain an AOA license within 90 days.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Four years of an approved apprenticeship training in the occupation of the position to be filled and one year of practical trade experience may be substituted for the five years of required experience. Four years of practical trade experience and 240 hours of vocational training may also meet the required qualification requirements for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Experience working safely on an airfield and communicating by two-way radio is desirable. Master Electrician License, other electrical related certifications and licenses, and training certificates (please provide copies) are highly desirable.
Company Description: The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is governed by a 13-member Board of Directors with five members appointed by the Governor of Virginia, three by the Mayor of the District of Columbia, two by the Governor of Maryland and three by the President of the United States.

The Airports Authority operates a two-airport system that provides domestic and international air service for the mid-Atlantic region. The organization consists of more than 1,300 employees in a structure that includes central administration, airports management and operations, and police and fire departments.

The Airports Authority is not taxpayer-funded but is self-supporting, using aircraft landing fees, rents and revenues from concessions to fund operating expenses at both Airports. The Dulles Development Program is funded by bonds issued by the Authority, Federal and State Airport Improvement Program funds, and Passenger Facility Charges.

The Airports Authority is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Dulles Toll Road, and the construction and funding of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project. All revenues collected from the Dulles Toll Road are used to maintain the road, make improvements to the Dulles Corridor and help fund the Dulles Rail project. No Dulles Toll Road revenues are used to fund activities at either Reagan National or Dulles International.

Dulles Rail is a 23-mile extension of the Metrorail system to Dulles International Airport and beyond to Loudoun County. Construction is underway on Phase 1 of the project from the existing East Falls Church Metro station to Wiehle Avenue in Reston with four stops in the Tysons Corner area. Phase 2 will continue the line along the median of the Dulles Access Road through Reston and Herndon to the Main Terminal at Dulles International, and finally, to Route 772 in Loudoun County’s Ashburn area.
