Facilities Services is the large and diverse organization that operates and maintains the Seattle campus facilities, grounds, utility distribution, transportation, waste management and environmental sustainability programs, and provides engineering direction for campus construction. Our Health Sciences Maintenance department currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Mason/Plasterer . This individual will perform journey-level masonry and plastering work, including bricklaying, plastering, and cement finishing, and to alter, repair, and maintain buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs.

Read and interpret blueprints and/or working drawings.

Lay bricks and blocks.

Prepare cement floors, sidewalks, stairs, and curbing; pour concrete floors, walls, and foundations.
Mix and apply glues, cements, and grouts; apply nonskid surfaces such as safety strips.

Operate power hammers and trowels, core drills, jackhammers, and diamond saws to remove concrete and other surfaces for repair and installation of conduit, air lines, etc.

Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, and needed materials and equipment.

Know and comply with occupational safety and health regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required.

Follow all University and Facilities Services’ policies and procedures.

Attend all required meetings and trainings.

Communicate and coordinate with other Facilities Services’ shops to facilitate work.

Interact with clients, co-workers, management, staff and students in a courteous and professional manner, with particular attention to excellent customer service.

May lead and instruct helpers.

Perform related duties as required.

Requirements:
High school graduation or equivalent; or 6 months' experience as a maintenance aide, or equivalent.

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a mason/plasterer, or full journey status as a mason/plasterer in a union; or, four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with others and as a member of a team, and in providing excellent customer services. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations.

1. Experience mixing and applying base coat plaster over lathe or any other type surface to which plaster will adhere, repair & finish drywall, preparing masonry floors for floor coverings, repairing and installing ceramic tile and grout, and repairing and installing vinyl/polymer floor tile & cove base, and tile for walls and floors, including materials such as quarry, ceramic, marble and brick pavers. Experience in the utilization of craft tools, including wet saws for efficient installation and repair of complex tile jobs. Experience in the proper and safe application of chemicals and grouts, including epoxy and waterproof membranes.

2. Power-wash sidewalks and outdoor stairways.


Condition of Employment:
# Valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Washington.
# May be required to accept variable work shift.
# Must be able to work in a nonsmoking environment.
# Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.
# Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
# Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions.
# Ability to lift and move heavy material is required.
# Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety procedures.
# A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas and in the Medical Center.

A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire.
