Job Summary:
The Construction Estimator provides accurate, timely, and complete Cost and Material Estimates in accordance with design, specifications, budget, and schedule and provides ongoing assistance during the building phase of projects including estimate interpretation, problem resolution, and successful processing of construction documents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
· Prepares full cost construction estimates for conceptual, design-build or renovation work.
· Reviews proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
· Researches products and materials for specification submittals.
· Prepares various trade estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work.
· Maintains files of working documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current (accurate) information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, price lists, etc.
· Reviews design options and recommends best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials.
· Coordinates job set up by preparing takeoffs, subcontracts, purchase orders, and other required documents on procured projects. Reviews plans and field changes. Prepares change orders, as required.
· Supports other department personnel and perform additional duties, per supervisor's direction
· Actively supports the achievement of construction goals and objectives. Stays abreast of evolving industry trends and best practices, including new techniques and equipment.
· Accurately prepares estimates. Reviews proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope. Determines required contents of estimates and evaluates historical data in order to project unit and man hour figures. Ensures projects are completed on time, in accordance to business and company standards, policies, and procedures.
· Collaborates across department and supports consistent estimating, project management practices and administrative procedures. Ensures policies, procedures, and standards are adhered to as well as protect the company’s interests.
· Partners on problem resolution, implementing ongoing efficiencies, and improving ways of accomplishing project goals. Recommends and incorporates changes in procedures, objectives, or best solutions based on cost, engineering quality, and availability of materials.
· Establishes and coordinates completion dates and technical specifications in estimates for project teams. Specifically: calculates complete takeoff for scope of work using computer aided system; estimates manpower, equipment, and material needs; coordinates with field personnel to schedule work; and continually evaluates progress and results.
· Completes internal administrative organization responsibilities and documentation, including project logs, files, records and reports. May include cost estimates, bids, safety, training, personnel and equipment resources, state and federal regulations, and foremen’s diaries. Contributes to written and up-to-date estimating/construction guidelines, manuals, and policies and procedures.
· Aspires to achieve a zero injury culture through visible support of GALA’s Injury Prevention and Safety program, the implementation/interpretation of safety programs, active participation in safety meetings and training sessions and ensuring required safety training for craft is completed. Proactively identifies, and communicates, safety improvements and hazardous/potentially hazardous conditions to maintain a safe, healthy work environment and meet corporate safety standards.
· Establishes, promotes, and protects GALA Construction values including diversity, teamwork, fair work environment, and respect of others. Maintains a “team” spirit within the business unit. Works and cooperates with other disciplines (across company lines). Uses resources effectively and efficiently.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES -- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. · Ability to read blueprints and comprehend construction methods is required.
· Must possess strong mathematical and analytical skills.
· Ability to assume responsibility and to interface and communicate effectively with others, have strong interpersonal skills and be self-motivated.
· Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives are prerequisites
· Valid Driver’s License
· Ability to work effectively unsupervised
· Ability to preserve confidential and proprietary information and successfully avoid conflicts-of-interest
· Strong working knowledge of computers and peripheral material including software and equipment for estimating and project management.
· Thorough knowledge of construction methods, codes and regulations
· Strong understanding of industry practices, processes, standards, technology, equipment methods, cost control, schedules, etc. and their impact on project activities
· Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Must demonstrate an ability to work in a team and maintain effective working relationships
· Must demonstrate strong attention to detail
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, (or related field) or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience
· Minimum 4 years of Residential Construction Estimating experience
