Job Description: Responsible for the efficient inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and installation of locomotive electrical wiring and equipment such as traction motors, generators, lighting fixtures and other electrical components, in order to keep locomotives operating at peak performance and to ensure conformance to required FRA, company, and customer specifications. This is accomplished by performing the following duties.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned, as requested or required.

1. Under the direction of the Repair Line Foreman in conjunction with the Shop Superintendent, performs required inspections, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance to ensure that locomotive electrical components, electrical wiring and electrical equipment conform to specifications and operate properly.

2. Completes inspection and repair reports according to company and FRA specifications and guidelines.

3. Takes and records hour meter readings.

4. Tests operation of event recorder, verifies tape on reader, lists defects, and informs supervisor of failed tests.

5. Inspects main and sidewall heaters for proper operation.

6. Checks auxiliary generator voltage, and adjusts as necessary.

7. Tests wheel slip protection function.

8. Adjusts, cleans, repairs and tests electrical control equipment of locomotives following wiring diagrams and using specialized equipment and hand tools.

9. Following general safety rules, performs installation of locomotive electrical components, electrical wiring and electrical equipment to ensure proper operation and compliance with required federal and company specifications.

10. Tests, installs and repairs circuit connections and electrical equipment, including generator brushes, commutators, panel lighting, circuit breakers, junction boxes, voltage regulators, and reverse current relays to ensure that all connections and equipment conform to required specifications and are operating properly.

11. Regularly examines parts such as control points, relays and wiring and adjusts or replaces defective parts as needed.

12. Observes operation of relays to verify conformance to required specifications.

13. Disassembles electric controller cylinder and replaces defective parts, such as copper contact segments, insulation disks, and spacing washers.

14. Examines systems for short circuits or broken wires preparatory to high potential test, using megameter, and tests for defective circuits.

15. Notes all defects and repairs according to FRA and company specifications and guidelines.

16. Checks electrolyte level in batteries, connections of all cables; washes battery and adds water to cells as needed.

17. Ensures all covers and guards are in place and secure.

18. May fabricate or weld parts as directed.

19. Analyzes and resolves problems related to inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and installation of locomotive electrical wiring and equipment, such as traction motors, generators, lighting fixtures and other electrical components and assists co-workers in resolution of problems.

20. Assists locomotive mechanics in performing mechanical inspection, repairs, and maintenance as needed.

21. Performs other duties as requested or required.


Requirements

Education/Experience

High school education or general education development (GED); or 3 to 6 months job-related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of and skills in locomotive electrical equipment repair and maintenance helpful.


2. Knowledge of and skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams.

3. Knowledge of and skill in using various electrical testing equipment such as a megameters, voltmeters, ohm meters.

4. Knowledge of and skill in using various hand tools, including hacksaws, cutting pliers, solder, wrenches, screwdrivers.

5. Knowledge of and skill in using various power tools, including drills, grinders, and air impact wrenches.

6. Ability to pay close attention to detail and coordinate various activities simultaneously.

7. Ability to operate various industrial equipment including forklifts.


8. Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form.

9. Ability to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; and or apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems.

10. Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information.

11. Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors and business associates in a clear, concise, courteous and professional manner.

12. Ability to write legibly.



Physical Demands:

Must have clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, 100% of time.

Must be able to see well enough to read diagrams, reports, levels on test equipment, and maintenance checklists; and to work on small wiring, electrical components 100% of time.

Must be able to work in tight, confined spaces 100% of time.

Must be able to push, pull and/or lift up to 125 pounds 5% of time.

Must be able to talk and hear well enough to communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and others within the company 100% of time.

Must be able to walk 100% of time.

Must be able to climb and balance to mount locomotive by climbing steps 100% of time.

Must be able to bend, twist, crawl in open or confined spaces 100% of time.

Must be able to reach with hands and arms 100% of time.


Physical Dimensions:

The employee is required to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently; and or up to 50 pounds of force regularly.


Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to loud noise; moving mechanical parts; diesel, grease and oil smells; outside weather elements and conditions; and risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat from equipment; small enclosed spaces. The employee is occasionally exposed to high voltage; blowing dust.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Employees in this job do not have supervisory responsibilities.
