This employment opportunity is with the Blue Mountain Recovery Center (BMRC), Addictions and Mental Health, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). This position is represented by a union.

This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as needed.

Please be aware that due to the economic downturn and subsequent state budget short-fall the Governor has ordered mandatory furloughs for employees. This position will be required to take furloughs in the biennium 2009-2011.

Blue Mountain Recovery Center (BMRC) provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult specialty populations from throughout the state.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your PD 100 application form will be reviewed to verify that you meet the qualifications stated in this section.

Four years of experience as a skilled carpenter. The experience must include form building; rough framing; outside and inside finishing; layout; care and use of tools and wood working machinery; blueprint reading; and application of safety standards and codes;

OR

Completion of an apprenticeship (four years) under a skilled carpenter which included experience as listed above. Be sure a copy of your Journeyman Carpenters card is attached to your application form.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Carpenter does journey-level carpentry work to maintain and repair all buildings at BMRC. Work includes on-going maintenance such as roofing, siding, door frames, doors, windows, interior wall alterations, concrete sidewalks, cabinet fabrication, furniture repair, and building construction.

Major duties include:

Construct and or make alterations to room additions, office space, work areas, cabinet and counters. Supervise others when assigned to perform related work.

Perform carpentry work on floors and their covering, roofs, stairs, doors, windows, screens, and a variety of wood fixtures.

Repair and fabricate tables, desks, chairs, benches and other furniture using stationary power tools such as power saws, jointers, planers, sanding and routing machines.

Reviews plans, estimates material cost and labor required for assigned projects and keeps simple records.

Secures building permits as needed for projects.

Prepares and builds concrete forms for sidewalks, driveways, steps, ADA ramps and walkways, and various other concrete applications. Finishes concrete to a uniform surface.

Cleans, sharpens, and makes repairs to hand and bench tools.

May be required to perform duties related to resident safety, such as handrails and chain link fencing. Performs miscellaneous duties such as painting, moving furniture and equipment. Operate equipment such as backhoes, ladder trucks, gravel truck, and other items.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must have basic computer skills and be willing to learn new technologies as they are introduced into the workplace.

Work performed in a psychiatric hospital, serving individuals with mental illness. Daily routines can be hectic, with exposure to hostile, angry residents with the potential for violent behavior. Daily exposure to infectious diseases, biohazards, noises and contaminants.

Exposure to insulation materials, adhesives, dust, power tools, extension and stepladders, portable scaffolding on a daily basis.

Work hours subject to change with little notice. May be required to work hours that exceed regular schedule, i.e., a double shift or a different shift in addition to regular schedule.

May be required to move extremely large or heavy objects (TV’s, tables, equipment) weighing in excess of 70 lbs.

You must have a valid Oregon driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. If not, you must be able to provide an alternate method of transportation.
