Position Summary The Electrician III is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of lighting systems and high voltage switchgear and distribution lines on campus. The Electrician III maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs motor controls and other power circuits, kitchen equipment (commercial and residential), and alarm, signal, and low voltage circuits. The Electrician III performs minor construction and remodeling of campus office spaces.
Education Required HS Diploma or equivalent

Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement.
Experience Required 5 years
Experience in the electrical trade, preferably in an institutional, commercial or industrial environment.
Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement.
License/Certification Required -Journeyman Electrician or Maintenance Electrician License.
- Valid Texas Driver's License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past 10 years.
Other Skills Required - Ability to analyze electrical control circuits
- Ability to read schematic and wiring diagrams and troubleshoot.
- Must be able to follow the guidelines of National Electrical Code and City of Houston Chapter 85 when designing and installing electrical apparatus
- Must be able to make rapid decisions during emergency situations.
- Must be able to use multimeter, recorders, ammeter and other instruments required to troubleshoot and analyze problems in electric circuits.
- Must be able to apply safe work habits for safety of self and coworkers, using tools and protective equipment carefully and correctly, and following department and university safety rules.
Education Preferred Electrical apprenticeship or other related technical training/education.
Experience Preferred Electrical maintenance and controls background.
License/Certification Preferred

Physical Demands - Will occasionally climb ladders and perform work at heights, and works in crawl spaces under buildings, between floors and in attics.
- Position requires moderate to heavy physical activity, and must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time (up to 4 hours).
Working Conditions
(e.g. Weekend/evening work, travel, inclement weather, hazards) Work Environment: In various locations around campus, both indoors and outdoors. May be required to work in inclement weather. Work is done in utility tunnels which are extremely hot and can be hazardous. Exposure to hazards such as rotating machinery, sumps and electrical gear.

Work Schedule: This position will act as a stand-by or call-out Electrician for emergency repairs, on a rotating schedule, for the purpose of responding to call-out work orders after hours and on weekends. May have scheduled overtime or other than normal working hours to facilitate maintenance when equipment is available for service.

Please Note: This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency. This may include working in flood or storm conditions to repair or restore damaged facilities and Distribution systems.
